Playwright
Brack Llewellyn’s short play “Three Founding Fathers Walk
Into A Bar” asks the question, “What was on the minds of the members of
the Second Continental Congress the night before the famous signing of
the Declaration of Independence?”
In the city of Philadelphia it is the hot, sweltering night of July
3rd, 1776. North Carolina’s three representatives to the Second
Continental Congress—Joseph Hewes (David Nielsen), John Penn (Garry
Wadell) and William Hooper (Chris Powell)—have gathered in a seedy
tavern for a clandestine caucus of their own. Hewes, a wealthy
businessman and landowner, has deep moral and political concerns about
the document they will be called upon to sign the next day. At first,
Penn and Hooper dismiss Hewes’ worries, but as the conversation among
the men continues (and the ale flows), all three realize that Mr.
Jefferson’s document—as monumental as it is—is only a beginning,
raising more questions than answers. By the evening’s end Hewes, Penn
and Hooper resolve to seek a resolution to some of their questions
about the Declaration. They will sign--but as patriots, they pledge to
continue the important work of building a “more perfect union.”
